Hevesi Gift-Wraps Resignation
Democratic state comptroller Alan Hevesi is handing over an unusual holiday present today, his resignation. Hevesi is facing indictment for failure to reimburse the state after having an employee cart his ailing wife around. Now, he's calling it quits.
As Wayne Barrett wrote on December 12, Hevesi is hardly a "recidivist abuser" and could well have been spared, except that the corruption fighter pictured below has a reputation to protect.
(Thanks, Alan: Good-guy gov-elect Eliot Spitzer)
Under the terms of the deal, Hevesi would plead guilty to a class E felony and leave office effective Jan. 3, the same day Governor-elect Eliot Spitzer would give his first State of the State address.
