Homeless Genius Teen Invited to State of the Union
Last week, Runnin' Scared brought you news of Samantha Garvey, a 17-year-old aspiring marine biologist from Long Island.
Garvey gained nationwide attention when reports surfaced that she and her family were living in a homeless shelter -- and that she'd risen to become a semifinalist in Intel's science competition despite economic hardship.
There has since been an outpouring of support for Garvey and her family -- an anonymous donor has paid to kennel her dog until the Garveys have a home, and many have called her school offering to help fund the teen's college education.
CBS now reports that L.I. Congressman Steve Israel has asked Garvey to watch President Barack Obama's State of the Union address Jan. 24 and offered her a "prestigious gallery ticket."
Israel also invited Garvey's parents to watch the speech from his office, CBS notes.
