Internet Hoax Becomes Reality: Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath Singer, Dead at 67
Late Saturday night, the rumor spread that Black Sabbath (post-Ozzy) and Dio vocalist Ronnie James Dio, who has been suffering from stomach cancer, had died, leading to a war over his Wikipedia page. The page was subsequently locked last night and Dio's wife and manager reportedly sent a message to blabbermouth.net denying the rumors at 2:35 a.m. EST on Sunday, May 16: "I am at the hospital and Ronnie has NOT passed away!!!! He is not doing good, but he is not dead. I will let you know if anything changes. Thank you for your concern."
At around 7:45 a.m., something changed. Ronnie James Dio passed away at the age of 67.
"My heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45 a.m.," said a statement by Wendy Dio posted Sunday on the site and confirmed by publicist Maureen O'Connor.
Wendy Dio said that friends and family were able to say their goodbyes to her husband, and asked for privacy. She concluded: "Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever."
Rest in peace, big guy:
