'CARAMOOR JAZZ FESTIVAL'
Caramoor, 149 Girdle Road, Katonah, New York, 914-232-5035, caramoor.org/html/jazz.htm
July 30 and August 6 Don't be fearful of training an hour north; some days it takes all afternoon just to reach the Rockaways. The Westchester haven has become a smart destination for hardcore jazzers; last year's affair was a well-rounded bill curated by Joe Lovano. He's back in the driver's seat this summer. So it ain't shocking to see a Charles McPherson-Tom Harrell homage to Bird & Diz; a "Percussion Discussion" featuring Carvin, Cyrille, and Hart; Lovano's own "Sax Summit" with Dave Leibman and Michael Brecker; and the Mingus Dynasty. Don't forget the food, the grounds, and the follow-up weekend date, which boasts Bill Charlap and Luciana Souza.

June 17 'MICHEL CAMILO: SOLO, DUO, & TRIO' (Frederick P. Rose Hall, Time Warner Center)
June 17 'WAYNE & DAVE': WAYNE SHORTER QUARTET+DAVE HOLLAND QUINTET (Carnegie Hall); George Wein's multi-concert baby is the bomb in June (the JVC Jazz Fest runs from 14-25), and this Carnegie Hall bill featuring co-headliners Wayne Shorter and Dave Holland is the right way to light the fuse. A couple spins through the forthcoming Beyond the Sound Barrier and you'll see why the tenor saxophonist's foursome is one of jazz's most sage and elliptical outfits. Holland's currently working a big band, but his agile quintet is at its core; they, invariably, move as one.
June 17 BAD PLUS+CHARLIE HUNTER TRIO+JAMES CARTER ORGAN TRIO (Prospect Park Bandshell): Three sets of threes mark this JVC-associated Prospect Park romp. The Bad Plus is a piano trio that turns jazz inside out to let its rock vibe show. That means a splash 'n' thud drummer and a cover of "We Are the Champions." Charlie Hunter's trio splits the diff between unk-fay and oove-gray in a way that lets you know he wouldn't sell you no shite. James Carter's organ trio positions its blast-furnace saxophone boss in the center of some hard-hitting swing. Prepare to get physical.

June 21 'A FOUR SCORE SALUTE TO BARBARA CARROLL' (Kaye Playhouse)
June 21 CESARIA EVORA+KEREN ANN+LURA (Beacon Theatre) MARIA SCHNEIDER ORCHESTRA (World Financial Center Plaza) There's a luscious sweep to the composer/ arranger's large ensemble. While prioritizing subtletycheck her Grammy-winning Concert in the Garden for a glimpse of her group at its most eloquentshe spreads a wide canvas to be colored. The band, from Frank Kimbrough's piano to Donny McCaslin's tenor sax, fills it in like the charts were their own. Nurturing a coalition is a bandleader's duty, and Schneider's a pro at all the particulars.

June 25 'NEW YORK NOW!' (Knitting Factory) It's a fest within a fest as the Knit hooks up with the JVC squad. It's also one-stop shopping (on three stages) for the best and brightest of the city's younger generation. The curators took a deep breath when programming the show. There are freewheeling sax groups (Ben Allison's Kush and Tim Berne's Hard Cell), pianistic persuasiveness (Jean-Michel Pilc and Robert Glasper), and cool eclecticism (Min Xiao-Fen's Blue Pipa Trio and the Jacob Katz Jazz Odyssey). The physical layout of the Knit feeds the collective energy on nights like these; prepare for full-tilt exuberance.

August 13 'LINCOLN CENTER OUT OF DOORS 35TH BIRTHDAY BASH': MARCIA BALL BLUES BAND (Damrosch Park Bandshell)
August 14 DANNY MIXON QUARTET (North Plaza)
August 17 BABATUNDE LEA QUINTET & KEVIN JONES+CHICO HAMILTON AND EUPHORIA (North Plaza)
August 23 ZERUI GROUP (North Plaza)
August 28 DEE DEE BRIDGEWATER (Damrosch Park Bandshell) Intrepid is the word for the way the sublime jazz singer negotiates gems like "Let's Do It" and "My Ship." Her annual visits to the city usually conclude with longtime fans being reminded of the acrobatics that initially wooed them, and newcomers shaking their heads in wonder.
September 2 TRIFACTOR: BILLY BANG, KAHIL EL ZABAR, AND BLUIETT Griping about Lincoln Center's banishment of outcats will be quelled for a moment; as the unusual blend of violinist Billy Bang and baritone saxophonist Hamiet Bluiett resounds through the North Plaza, it will be given a groove by percussionist Kahil El Zabar. Each is a go-getter when it comes to extended techniques, meaning their instruments are used in ways inventive enough to have earned all three the designation of "experimentalists."
'RIVER TO RIVER FESTIVAL'

August 4 MCCOY TYNER (Castle Clinton) Some music is geared to sound just as strong outdoors as it is indoors. The pianist's modal magnificence has never had a problem reaching for the sky; the first time I ever caught him somewhere in the '70s around the time of Atlantishe created swell after swell of 10-fingered tenacity. That's exactly what he'll do here. Maybe having his current ensemble pointing its collective oomph at the waters of New York's harbor will generate extra inspiration.
'VISION FESTIVAL X'

(check)June 14-19 The tenth edition of this annual affair finds the post-loft aesthetic in good hands, the alignment of its participants bringing a cultural weight to an underground music that often goes unnoticed by the mainstream. For six days compelling veterans such as trumpeter Bill Dixon and violinist Leroy Jenkins share bills with younger free improvisers. This year, there's a hat tip to Chicago saxophonist Fred Anderson, and the overall lineup looks especially rich.
