Koch Brothers Face Wrath of Anonymous Hackers in Operation Wisconsin
We've been following the series of attacks planned by the group Anonymous, a loosely knit collective of hacker activists, as they've taken on the Westboro Baptist Church, the security firm HBGary and entire governments in the Middle East. Now, they've announced a move against Charles and David Koch, the billionaires behind Koch Industries and endless free market political causes. According to Anonymous, "The Koch brothers have made a science of fabricating 'grassroots' organizations and advertising campaigns to support them in an attempt to sway voters based on their falsehoods."
This time, Anonymous is standing with the union protesters in Wisconsin, according to their press release:
Koch Industries, and oligarchs like them, have most recently started to manipulate the political agenda in Wisconsin. Governor Walker's union-busting budget plan contains a clause that went nearly un-noticed. This clause would allow the sale of publicly owned utility plants in Wisconsin to private parties (specifically, Koch Industries) at any price, no matter how low, without a public bidding process. The Koch's have helped to fuel the unrest in Wisconsin and the drive behind the bill to eliminate the collective bargaining power of unions in a bid to gain a monopoly over the state's power supplies.
The first move on offense by Anonymous was, as usual, to take down the Koch-backed website for Americans for Prosperity with a DDoS attack, though the site has been working again since last night. As for more longstanding moves against the House of Koch, Anonymous recommends a boycott of all Koch Industries' paper products, under the Georgia-Pacific banner, including:
U.S. Product Boycott List * Vanity Fair * Quilted Northern * Angel Soft * Sparkle * Brawny * Mardi Gras * Dixie
European Product Boycott List * Demak'Up * Kitten Soft * Lotus / Lotus Soft * Tenderly * Nouvelle Soft * Okay Ktchen Towels * Colhogar * Delica * Inversoft * Tutto
Anonymous claims their actions support "the downtrodden American people, whose rights and liberties are being systematically removed one by one, even when their own government refuses to listen or worse -- is complicit in these attacks." But if their recent track record is any indication, they'll probably have a new target by tomorrow and will have left nothing but a buggy website in their wake.
