Lamont Pride, Alleged Killer of NYPD Officer Peter Figoski, Says He's Sorry
Lamont Pride, the 27-year-old man who allegedly shot NYPD officer Peter Figoski in the face, killing him, when Figoski attempted to stop a home invasion in Cypress Hills last month, has told the court he's sorry for what he did, and that he didn't mean for it to happen. Pride had initially claimed he'd gone to the house to buy weed when robbers kicked the door in; he said he attempted to wrestle a gun from one of them, and it went off. Later he admitted he'd planned the robbery with co-defendant Nelson Morales, but he continues to claim the shooting was an accident.
Via the New York Post:
Pride said he was running out of the basement when he was startled by Figoski, according to investigators' handwritten notes turned over to the defense yesterday.
"I tried to run," he said. "I was scared. I clutched both hands. This fired the gun."
He told detectives he threw the murder weapon under a car and ran, but surrendered when he heard a cop yell, "Stop or I'll shoot!"
Pride and the other four defendants charged with the crime have all pleaded not guilty to murder. Meanwhile, the Daily News points out that along with Pride's apology -- "It went wrong and I'm sorry. I can't take it back" -- he also offered up a big smile in court yesterday.
