You could spend Thursday and Friday night at Filter 14 and have a barrelful of fun, not to mention get an earful of good, challenging music in the techno vein. On Thursday, there's a Warp Records showcase featuring new Warp blood Jimmy Edgar, as well as locals Marcus, Tim and Mal, and Casio. Those who want to check out the new Squarepusher record can do so if they get there early, at 9:30. The next night, tough beats come courtesy of Kompakt recording artist Jake Fairley, a Toronto producer who likes it hard and a little experimental. Also playing is fellow Canuck Pan/tone and New Yorkers Greg Shiff and Pjay. Boston's DJ Smartypantswho's recorded for the esteemed techno imprint Traumalso throws down. Thursday and Friday @ 10, Filter 14, 432 W 14th, 212.366.5680
Since you'll be in the neighborhood, on Thursday roam around the corner to APT for a little Italo disco courtesy of local boy John Selway, New York's jack-of-all-trades. He's spinning at Roy Dank and Brennan Greens POP YOUR FUNK monthly, a groovy little affair, and Mr. Dank tells me that Selway "may well have the most extensive Italo collection in North America." And that would be well worth the trip. Thursday @ 10, APT, 419 W 13th, 212.414.4245
If the city's nightclubs seem a little bare this week, that's 'cause the whole industry has headed to Miami for the Winter Music Conference. But the Mon-Daze posse have other (better) ideas. They host their annual FUCK WMC party with Sonic Groove's leading techno lady, Heather Heart, leading the pounding, as well as Dathan and Louilou on the decks. Monday @ 10, Sapphire Lounge, 249 Eldridge St, 212.777.5153
