FINAL CUT: THE MAKING OF HEAVEN'S GATE AND THE UNMAKING OF A STUDIO
June 13 at 8 on Trio
Trio has declared June "Flops!" month, featuring this enticing original documentary about Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate. The notoriously overbudget film effectively put United Artists out of business. This doc holds Cimino largely responsible for killing off the auteurist strain of '70s American film but also redeems him as a perfectionist artiste who sacrificed success for that vision thing.
Tuesdays at 9 on Bravo
Just like Rocco DiSpirito, Jonathan Antina celebrity hairdresser opening a new Beverly Hills salonis charismatic and talented, and has put his career at stake to star in his own reality show. Antin flirts with women (including a job applicant, whom he dates instead of hiring), which is presumably supposed to evoke memories of Warren Beatty's hedonistic character in Shampoo. But in the episodes I've seen, Antin's mostly obsessing over contractors and profit margins. Watching someone panic over his business may be entertaining, but it sure ain't sexy.
5IVE DAYS TO MIDNIGHT
June 13, 6 to 11 p.m., on Sci Fi Channel
Timothy Hutton stars in this engaging five-part thriller (which will run in its entirety on June 13) about a physics professor who receives mysterious documents that suggest he will die in five days. The show takes a few too many notes from 24 and the noir classic D.O.A., but at least it has a sense of humor, slipping Blue Öyster Cult's "Don't Fear the Reaper" into the soundtrack.
THE CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WIMBLEDON
