Maria Torres, 67, Slain in Sunset Park, Allegedly by Her Nurse
Date: Wednesday, March 24, 2010, 11:00 a.m.
Location: 558 50 Street, Sunset Park, Brooklyn.
The city Medical Examiner has ruled the death of 67-year-old Maria Torres, of 50th Street in Brooklyn, a homicide. Torres was found unconscious in her apartment, and was declared dead by paramedics.
While the ME is still working on the exact cause of death, the police have arrested a woman, Yamilette Hidalgo, 35, of the same address, on murder charges. Torres was found nude on the bathroom floor.
Hidalgo, Torres' home health aide, initially claimed to cops that a man burst into the apartment that morning and knocked her unconscious, and when she woke up, the victim was dead, the Daily News reported. Hidalgo had bruises and cuts on her face, which may have been self-inflicted, or caused by Torres defending herself.
