Mayor Bloomberg: 'Double the Class Size With a Better Teacher Is a Good Deal for the Students'
Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday at a conference at MIT that if he had it his way, he'd slash half the teaching staff of city schools. CBS doesn't have a whole lot of context for the quote, but read it and weep:
"If I had the ability to just design the system and say ex cathedra this is what we're going to do you would cut the number of teachers in half and weed out all the bad ones."
He went on:
"And double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students," he said.
The video on CBS's website is strangely truncated and the reporter speaks over half of the mayor's quotes, though. The New York Times' SchoolBook got in touch with the mayor's office, who said that CBS had compressed the quotes. They gave SchoolBook the full quote:
Education is very much, I've always thought, just like the real estate business. Real estate business, there are three things that matter: location, location, location is the old joke. Well in education, it is: quality of teacher, quality of teacher, quality of teacher. And I would -- if I had the ability, which nobody does really, to just design a system and say, 'ex cathedra, this is what we're going to do,' you would cut the number of teachers in half, but you would double the compensation of them, and you would weed out all the bad ones and just have good teachers. And double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.
Which doesn't sound much better, actually. Still a pretty contentious thing for the mayor to say in a time when class sizes are swelling and people are pissed off about it.
