Mike Bloomberg's Approval Ratings Boosted By Irene
Mike Bloomberg's extra-cautious handling of Hurricane Irene appears to have reversed the damage Snowpocalypse did to his reputation, according to a new poll released by Quinnipiac University. The poll shows that 54 percent of New Yorkers now approve of Bloomberg's performance overall, while 86 percent laud his hurricane response and in particular, 90 percent approved of his decision to evacuate flood-prone areas. This is in contrast to earlier this year post-blizzard when the mayor's approval ratings slipped to 39 percent.
The poll queried 1,282 registered voters between September 1st and 6th. The margin of error was plus or minus 3 percentage points.
Interestingly, it seems as though the recent scandal over Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith's arrest and resignation didn't affect Bloomberg much at all. The director of the poll, Maurice Caroll, said in a statement: "This survey was conducted after Hurricane Irene and during the storm about Deputy Mayor Stephen Goldsmith's arrest -- but maybe that second storm is a tempest in a teapot."
"The critics cried 'overkill!' But most people agreed with the mayor, 'better safe than sorry,'" the statement continues. "Overwhelmingly, Bloomberg's handling of Irene gets high marks."
Other interesting tidbits from the poll:
- Bloomberg, who runs as a Republican, is more popular among Democrats than among Independents and Republicans.
- In union households, Bloomberg has way lower ratings: 44 percent approve and 46 percent disapprove of him.
- Not directly Bloomberg-related, but people really don't want to pay for entrance to the 9/11 museum. Seventy-one percent of those polled said they didn't want any admissions charge at all, while even those who would be willing to pay found the $25 suggested donation too high.
