Mike Bloomberg's Ban On Big-Boy Sodas: Roughly Four Out Of Ten New Yorkers Want To Be Treated Like Children
This is how Mike Bloomberg sees New Yorkers -- and more than 40 percent of Gotham's population think it's OK.
We weren't too shocked this afternoon when we learned that a poll conducted over the weekend found that the majority of New Yorkers don't like Mayor Mike Bloomberg's proposed ban on sugary drinks being sold in containers larger than 16 ounces. However, we were stunned to learn that more than 40 percent of New Yorkers actually agree with the mayor's latest attempt to protect you from yourself -- and in Manhattan, the majority of residents think a ban on big-boy cups is a good idea.
According to a Marist/NY1 poll published yesterday, 53 percent of New Yorkers think Bloomberg's proposed ban is a crappy idea, while 42 percent agree with the mayor. Six percent of those polled were unsure.
Additionally, 53 percent of those polled think Bloomberg's plan is an example of government going too far.
The poll also found that certain boroughs hate the idea more than others, while -- as we mentioned -- the majority of the people in Manhattan actually like the idea.

According to the poll, 58 percent of adults in Queens and Staten Island and 55 percent of those in Brooklyn say the ban is a bad idea. In Manhattan, 52 percent of residents polled like the idea. In the Bronx, 49 percent of those polled disagree with Bloomberg's proposed ban, while 44 percent like it.
Bloomberg's caught a lot of shit over the latest proposal for his New York nanny-state, but has defended the plan by (incorrectly) claiming that a ban on large sodas doesn't take away anyone's right to do anything (except, of course, the right of adults to decide which size cup they drink soda out of). According to the mayor, he's "simply forcing you to understand" the dangers of soda.
When is this guy's term over again?
