Milk, Happy-Go-Lucky Top NY Film Critics Awards
The New York Film Critics Circle has split its top four honors between two films. Milk was named Best Picture and Sean Penn's eponymous role won him the Best Actor Award; Sally Hawkins in Happy-Go-Lucky's title-describing lead took Best Actress and Mike Leigh won Best Director. A 3-1 division in these categories happens rarely (Brokeback Mountain last did it in 2005) and Silence of the Lambs swept in 1991, but this is the Circle's first straight split. Leigh had previously been named Best Director in 1999 for Topsy-Turvy.
Josh Brolin won Best Supporting Actor as Milk assassin Dan White, and Penelope Cruz' obstreperous ex in Vicky Cristina Barcelona won Best Supporting Actress. Jenny Lumet, son of director Sidney, won Best Screenplay for Rachel Getting Married, and Wall-E was named Best Animated Film. Slumdog Millionaire (Best Cinematography), Man on Wire (Best Documentary), Frozen River (Best First Film), and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days (Best Foreign Film) rounded out the winners, which will be honored in a ceremony on January 5.
