Monserrate's Girlfriend-Maybe-Victim to Testify at Trial
In other legal news, it looks like Karla Giraldo (pictured), state senator Hiram Monserrate's girlfriend, will be subpoenaed to testify at Monserrate's trial, in which he is accused of intentionally slashing her with a broken glass. Giraldo has been insisting that the slashes, which required 20 stitches to close, were accidentally administered, though some witnesses say she characterized the incident differently when she first got to the hospital. Justice William M. Erlbaum, who is trying the case without a jury with the Monserrate team's blessing, "particularly requested" her presence, says the Times; she will appear as a witness for the prosecution.
The defense must be feeling pretty good about having waived Monserrate's right to a jury trial now, as the video of the accused dragging a wounded Giraldo out of his apartment building the night of the incident, an ER worker's testimony that she called Monserrate "crazy" at the hospital, and today's description of the bloody scene in Monserrate's apartment might have had a negative emotional effect on jurors.
