It is ugly out there. Winter storm Nika swept into town late last night, bringing with her heavy snow, sleet, freezing rain, traffic jams, public transit delays, and a risk of power outages.

The National Weather Service is forecasting accumulations of 4 to 6 inches of snow, and a quarter inch to four tenths of an inch of ice. The ice building up on tree limbs and power lines could cause power outages. The winter storm warning will remain in effect until 6 p.m. Wednesday.

In New Jersey, Governor Christie has preemptively declared a state of emergency, and New Jersey State Police have lowered the speed limit on the New Jersey turnpike to 35 mph north of exit 12.

Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a hazardous travel advisory Tuesday night. "Be ready for a difficult morning commute," de Blasio said. "If you do not need to use your car, don't use your car. If you can use mass transit, please use mass transit."

Easier said than done, Mr. Mayor!

MTA's southbound Q trains are running local from 57 St-7 Av to Canal St, F trains are running local in both directions between Queens Plaza and Forest Hills-71 Ave, northbound 3 trains are running local from Times Sq-42 St to 96 St. Northbound D trains are running with delays due to switch problems at 62 St.

Earlier this morning, New Jersey Transit suspended Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coast lines. Midtown Direct and Montclair-Boonton busses were being rerouted into Hoboken. Trains resumed shortly before 6 a.m., but with delays systemwide. All NJ Transit lines are running on a storm schedule today. LIRR service, suspended between Jamaica and Penn stations earlier this morning, also resumed before 6 a.m. Metro North had a slew train combinations and cancellations too.

Schools are still open, and parents and students are not happy about it.
