New Jersey Mom Arrested After Taking 5-Year-Old Tanning
Just in case you were running out of reasons to make fun of New Jersey, we bring you the case of 44-year-old Patricia Krentcil, who was arrested last week after authorities say she brought her 5-year-old daughter tanning, resulting in the girl getting sunburned.
Krentcil, however, claims it's all a big misunderstanding.
Attempts to reach Krentcil this morning were unsuccessful, but she spilled her guts to NBC New York, claiming that she did bring the girl to a tanning salon, but she was never exposed to dangerous UV rays. She says the girl's burns happened when she was playing outside.
Krentcil says she considers her tanning regimen to be an errand, and she simply brought her daughter along like she would when she runs any errand. As we mentioned, she claims the girl was never exposed to the bright lights of a tanning booth.
"It's like taking your daughter to go food shopping," she told TV station. "There's tons of moms that bring their children in."
The misunderstanding, she claims, happened after the 5-year-old told people at school that her mother had taken her tanning. The theory is a teacher overheard the girl talking about going tanning with her mother and called police.
Because it's illegal for anyone under the age of 14 to use tanning beds -- and it's illegal for their parents to take them tanning -- Krentcil's been hit with one count of second-degree child endangerment. She's expected to appear before a judge later today.
