New York Olympians In London 2012 Summer Games: Archery and Field Hockey
Melissa Gonzalez and Jake Kaminski
The 2012 summer Olympics officially begins today in London. Though the Big Apple lost the bid to host these games back in 2005, we can take pride in the 35 New York-bred Olympians competing in the summer event. To get into the spirit of the festivities, we will be highlighting two of New York's own Olympians each day of the summer games. And to kick things off, let's learn a little bit more about our Olympians in Men's Archery and Women's Field Hockey.

While the box office success of the Hunger Games franchise has piqued American's interest in archery as of late, Jake Kaminski has been shooting competitively in the sport since age nine. In 2002, Kaminski began training in Olympic archery. After winning silver and gold in the Empire State Games the following year, he decided to take his Olympic dreams to the next level. Kaminski has been training in Olympic archery in California since 2006 and created a blog to document his time at the training center in Chula Vista, Calif. Kaminski is competing in both individual and team events in the summer games.
Name: Melissa Gonzalez
Olympic Event: Women's Field Hockey
Hometown: Mohegan Lake, NY
Gonzalez has made history with her trip to London by being the first player from Section 1 to make it to the Olympics in field hockey. A 2007 graduate of Lakeland High School in northern Westchester county, Gonzalez has been training for the Olympics for many years. She's had major victories along the way, including being a two-time first team All-American and making the 2010 US National Field Hockey team. Many are hoping Gonzalez can help break Team USA's 28- year losing streak when they open up the tournament July 29th.
Check back tomorrow, when we meet our Olympians in gymnastics and triathlon.
