New York Olympians In London 2012 Summer Games: Boxing
Marcus Browne and Jamel Herring
Today, we we learn a bit more about two first-time Olympians in boxing. Both of these young men have shown tremendous potential despite being relative newcomers to the sport's competitive circuit.
Name: Marcus Browne
Olympic Event: Boxing
Hometown: Parkhill, NY
The Staten Island native experienced a staggering loss during Monday's summer games. After a mere 9 minutes, he was defeated by Australian Damien Hopper. In the days leading up to the event, Browne had given several interviews with the Daily News where he confidently spoke of returning home with a gold medal.
While Browne's dreams of gold will have to be put on hold until he returns to another Olympic games, it's still been a promising year for Browne, 21. Brown has taken several gold medal victories in the US Championships as well as the Golden Gloves championship in 2010 and 2011. Hometown: Coram, NY
A Marine-turned-boxer, Jamel Herring has been active in the sport for over a decade. After a friend encouraged him to join a boxing gym, Herring found himself addicted to the sport. Herring is a first-time Olympian and is currently the top ranked amateur boxer in U.S. Light Welterweight. Before making the Olympic team, he earned a silver medal at the 2010 World Military Games and gold medals at the 2011 and 2012 Armed Forces Championships. Prior to his victories in competitive boxing, Herring was deployed to Iraq in 2005 and 2007.
