New York Olympians In London 2012 Summer Games: Shooting and Soccer
We're not too sure if shooting and soccer are pastimes that go well together, but it seems to work fine for our Olympic duo in today's spotlight both hailing from Rochester, NY. While one is already a two-time Olympian the other should get a gold medal just for showing off their chiseled bod.
Name: Abby Wambach
While she may have recently garnered buzz for showing off her incredible naked physique in ESPN Magazine's annual body issue, Abby Wambach doesn't need a publicity stunt.
Since she came onto the soccer scene while playing at the University of Florida, Wambach has earned some of the highest honors in the sport. In 2002, Wambach was the second overall draft pick for the Women's United Soccer Association, coming second to soccer pro Mia Hamm. She has won the U.S. Soccer Athlete of The Year Award five times and in 2011 the AP named her their female athlete of the year. Many sports analysts are calling these Olympic games a last hurrah for Wambach, who suffered a broken leg in 2008 the day before she was to compete in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. She and her teammates Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan got off to a great start earlier this week when they pulled out a victory against France in the first match of the 2012 summer games.
Name: Jason Turner
Olympic Event: Shooting
Hometown: Rochester, NY
Last month, this two-time Olympian made a trip back to his hometown of Rochester before beginning preliminaries for the Olympics. Jason Turner has been shooting competitively since the age of 12 and spent nearly a decade competing in the Rochester Rifle Club before going on to victories in both the 2004 and 2008 Olympics. Prior to switching to pistol shooting, Turner's weapon of choice was a rifle. According to his Olympic bio, when he's not winning medals for using deadly weapons, he likes to play golf and softball.
Check back for tomorrow's post where we meet our Olympians in Volleyball and Cycling.
