NYC RFD: Early Morning Notes from Our Little Town
Rockaway: Have You Seen This Man? "Victor Volunuev suffers from mild dementia and may be disoriented. He walked away from Belle Harbor assisted living facility on June 2, 2008... Approx. 5′4″, 145 lbs, 66 years old. Speaks Russian and some English. Last seen wearing black shorts, green t-shirt and black sneakers. WTC Area: Still in Lockdown. From Liberty Street to Vesey Park, and from West Street to Church, the area around Ground Zero will "be placed within a security zone, in which only specially screened taxis, limousines and cars would be allowed through 'sally ports,' or barriers staffed by police officers, constructed at each of five entry points," according to an NYPD plan. "The department hopes to have the plan in place by 2010." [New York Times]
Prospect Park: How to See Dylan Tonight. "The concert starts at 7:00 p.m., and the gates usually open one hour prior... Performance is RAIN or SHINE.. Official rules: 'Do not bring cans, bottles, coolers, alcoholic beverages, pets, video cameras, audio recording devices, or professional cameras into the festival site.' No lawnchairs... The Bandshell is located inside Prospect Park in Brooklyn, at Prospect Park West and 9th Street." [mcbrooklyn]
Highland Park: Congressional Tour. "Three members of the local congressional delegation [Nydia Velazquez, Edolphus Towns, and Anthony Weiner] will be touring the Ridgewood Reservoir located in Highland Park on Tuesday, August 12th at 9 am with the Highland Park/Ridgewood Reservoir Alliance, local community members, environmentalists and community leaders." (Tour leaves from the parking lot at Vermont Place off Highland Boulevard, between the Boulevard and Cypress Avenue.) [Lost In The Ozone]
Chelsea: Allerton Goes Glam. In 1998 Councilman Tom Duane called the fabled SRO Allerton Hotel "the biggest problem that lower Chelsea has had for as long as I can remember" (NYT, h/t Jeremiah's Vanishing New York). In 2006 and 2007, patrons of TripAdvisor reported, "It's not a hotel, it's a homeless shelter. Why it has a website and all is beyond me," and "this is indeed a Welfare/homeless shelter -- I live one block away and cringe each time I must walk by this hotel.." This year the Allerton will become "a Gem, the high-end boutique arm of multinational hotel chain Clarion." [Curbed]
