NYPD Tapes Fallout: Brooklyn Pols to Seek Resignation of 81st Precinct Commander
A group of elected officials, clergy and community board members intend to press Police Commissioner Ray Kelly to remove the commander of Bedford-Stuyvesant 81st Precinct, Deputy Inspector Steven Mauriello.
The decision to call for Mauriello's ouster came in a private meeting of local council members, pastors and others held specifically to address issues raised in the Voice's NYPD Tapes series. The series exposed a broad range of questionable activities in the precinct, including downgrading of crime complaints, possible civil rights violations, and doing stop and frisks for the purpose of hitting quotas.
