Open Mouth, Insert Foot: Geraldine Ferraro on Obama and Race
We called it yesterday: Hillary Clinton's past as the "stand by your man" part of a sex-scandalized couple would play out in election coverage. The News referred to yesterday as a "double whammy of a day" with her loss in the Mississippi primary and the Spitzer sex scandal, which, according to the News, "brought ugly headlines reminiscent of her husband's philandering." The Post didn't make the connection (they were probably too busy blurring the "F" word out of their pimptastic photo mock-up of Spitzer), but did cover Hillary Clinton's latest scandal.
Hill, you see, is having some problem with some of her supporters. We have the obvious Eliot Spitzer issues, but now Geraldine Ferraro—a former vice presidential nominee—has made statements to the press that "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position." The remark was denounced by Clinton yesterday, and Obama responded by telling an Allentown, Pa., paper that "I don't think Geraldine Ferraro's comments have any place in our politics or in the Democratic Party. They are divisive." The tabs pull out no stops in the accompanying photos. The Post, naturally, has an awkward, awful photo of Ferraro and Clinton from 2000, where Clinton looks, for lack of a better term, hysterical. The News photo is of a braying, cocky Ferraro, which is flanked by a photo of Obama looking serious and pensive. (The print edition crops the photo so that we only see Ferraro, and girl is looking old, which is probably another subtle jab.)
We wonder if this story will have any legs. Our local media is All-Spitz-All-The-Time, so who knows how this is playing out in the national media. Of course, the national cable news networks seem to be on Spitz patrol as well.
