Peeing a Lot at Night May Be a Sign of Your Impending Doom
Unfortunate news of the day, via the L.A. Times: If you pee a lot at night, you might die prematurely. And not because you're hitting your head on the toilet seat.
If you get up twice or more during the night to pee, you have nocturia -- the fancy name for peeing a lot -- a disease that 15.5% of men and 20.9% of women suffer from.
Taking into account such confounding factors as an enlarged prostate, researchers found that nocturia was associated with a 49% increased risk of premature death in men and a 32% increased risk in women. Men between the ages of 20 and 49 had 2.56 times the normal risk, while women in that age group had a 10% increase. The highest-risk group among women was for ages 50 to 64, a 56% increase.
Another study actually went so far as to say that peeing a lot at night may pose a significant economic burden to society because of the decreased productivity in professional folks who had to keep getting up to pee in the middle of the night and therefore did not get a good night's sleep.
Based on the investigators' conservative estimate that productivity loss was equivalent to 127 hours per person per year, with an average U.S. wage of $17.38 per hour, they estimated that economic value of the productivity lost in 2008 was $61 billion.
Whether that's true or not, chronic sleep loss seems to have an impact on your metabolism and endocrine function, and just make you crankier in general, so try to get those Zs. And, if you're getting up a lot in the middle of the night to pee and it's not because you just chugged a gallon of Poland Spring (or 6 beers), see your doctor. Heck, see your doctor anyway. He misses you.
