Pot-Smoking Moms Are Old News, Still Chill
The New York Post brings us a shocking revelation this morning: Moms (mostly ones from Brooklyn) smoke pot. Gasp! Horror! Objectification! The headline declares that they are "Smokin' Pot Mamas!"
But, alas, the Post is late to the game on this one. Fucked in Park Slope picked up on this in February when they noticed the mommy blogger at The Brooklyn Paper's column "What is the secret to happiness?" which suggested:
Do what it takes to enjoy. Take a little something (but not too much) to help ease the pressure, a puff of something or a little wine. Breathe in the fresh air with a walk in the park and appreciate the beauty of nature.
Yup, fresh air is what it is all about. Fucked in Park Slope also directed readers to a 2009 SodaHead article titled "Marijuana Moms on the Rise." Others have also periodically noticed this trend. Tyra took on the topic in 2010.
The Post's article is basically the counter to their recent take on "mommyrexia." Upper East Side moms are stressed-out anorexics, but Brooklyn moms are relaxed potheads:
Whenever the mood strikes when she's home -- "I don't travel with it," she says -- she'll take a hit or two and transform into Mellow Mom. "When you're smoking, you're on a different level," she says. "Things don't frustrate you as much."
Not to mention, there can be some trippy mommy-and-me interactions, according to a Kensington mom whom the Post called Jennifer:
The pot, she says, makes mom-and-baby time a whole different thing. "I have had moments where I felt like I could communicate with him better, back when he wasn't talking -- we'd have a silent, eye-contact kind of conversation," she says.
The prevailing argument is that it's better than Betty Draper-style wine guzzling, but, of course, the Post points out that, yes, it is illegal and that the idea of parents smoking pot makes CEO of the Hills Treatment Center in Los Angeles Dr. Howard Samuels feel ill and ask "are they retarded emotionally?" Ugh. A doctor using the word "retarded."
While we've already noted that this seems like a whole lot of old news, we can't help wondering just how old it really is. Isn't this what baby boomers have been doing for decades?
Here's a video from 2008 about weed-loving moms:
