Profilers

FELICE BELLE

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? It's racial profiling. I don't want to suggest that there's anything positive about it, but black people have been profiled for so long that it's something of a relief to have people realize that it can happen to other groups.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? You mean, if I were on a list of black girls who wear dreads, live in Brooklyn, and like Prince? Absolutely not.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? I think it's the perfect deal for a terrorist.

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? Personally, I think it's fine.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? Yes, I'd go in just to clear myself. To a certain extent, our immigration policy has come back to smack us. I married a Brazilian woman and I've seen how easy it is to take advantage of the system.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? Yes. This guy comes over here and drives a plane into our downtown and kills over 3000 people. Right now I really think we should continue to do whatever it takes.

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? I don't have a problem with it at all. If you have someone who fits the profile, then that's who you're looking for.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? Yes. It's like jury duty.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? Well, that's how the world works. You scratch my back and I scratch yours.

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? I know we all have the need to feel safe right now, but I would hope that we're going to be as fair as possible about the measures we take. Innocent people often get caught up in things.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? No, definitely not. I don't trust any large-scale government operation. Everything is very creepy right now. You read The New York Times and the news looks like a movie.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? No, it's blackmail.

GUS MICHALAKIS

Occupation Film editor

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? I don't want to be seen as sitting on the fence on an issue like this, but I think profiling is kind of inevitable. I'm not comfortable with the military tribunals; they're Kafkaesque.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? Probably not. I'd be a little bit nervous.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? There's something slimy about it.

ERICA STRICKON

Age 22

Resides Long Island

Occupation Record company assistant

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? I think it's something that needs to be done.

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? Yes, I would, because my feeling is that I have nothing to hide.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? No. Look at your source. It's someone who wants their citizenship, and it's hard to tell what's good information.

JERMAINE ABILES

Age 19

Resides Manhattan

Occupation Student

What do you think about questioning noncitizens who fit a certain ethnic profile? I think it's racial profiling. Since September 11, people have begun to profile each other: "If his name is Muhammad, he must be down with something."

Would you appear voluntarily to answer questions? No, and I'd be mad scared if I was on the list.

Are you comfortable with the attorney general's offer to help with immigration problems in exchange for information on terrorists? No, not at all. I think it's all a series of traps.
