Reasons to Be Ungrateful: Mumbai, Mall Violence, Parking Tickets
This Thanksgiving season isn't all turkey and gratitude hereabouts. It turns out two of the victims in the horrific Mumbai terror attacks were local -- a Brooklyn rabbi and his wife, Gavriel and Rivka Holtzberg, were slain at the Jewish center they ran. Their son Moshe was rescued by their nanny, and is now in the custody of his mother's parents.
The New York Times chose today to report that under Bloomberg parking tickets are up 42 percent, with Black Friday "the most-ticketed day of the last fiscal year," with 41,000 written on November 23, 2007. The Times even included an interactive map showing the city's ticket hotspots, July 2007 through July 2008. In Greenpoint, Manhattan Avenue between Nassau and Driggs got 1,038 tickets; in Bay Ridge, 86th Street between 4th and 5th Avenues got 2,879. But 14th Street between Seventh and Eighth is the champ, WCBS points out, with 11,713 -- though, two blocks over, only 12 tickets were issued.
GerritsenBeach.net marvels at the 78 tickets recorded on sleepy Gotham Avenue. "Serves you right for your fancy sidewalks and easily navigable blocks," the blog observes. Expectedly, The Angry New Yorker is enraged. "It's not called a 'Quota,' it's called a 'Performance Standard,'" he says. "Same wolf in sheeps clothing." He also refers to a traffic enforcement agent as "a fucking leech feeding the bloomberg bottom line. Quit your job, or better still, kill yourselves. Trust me, you won't be missed by anyone."
Meanwhile, what's pissing off denizens of cop board Thee Rant? They're all over the Green Acres Mall violence (trampling, miscarriage), largely attributing it to the racial makeup of the clientele ("As soon as one Minority moved unto a Block the Whites started Fleeing for fear that there neighborhood would become Crime ridden. Judge for yourself if those fears were justified," "yo yo you gots to love the afro american race!!" "Funny that the comment about GA mall not being bad came from an OBAMA supporter," etc).
