Residents of buildings near the site of last night's crane collapse at 80 Maiden Lane who were evacuated last night were allowed to return to their homes this morning at 8:45 a.m.

Stretches of Maiden Lane and Pearl Street were closed last night while workers from Skylift Master Riggers tried to right the crane. The News is reporting that Skylift, the operators, were also the owners of the crane. The Times and ABC News are going with Bay Crane. The crane was lowered to the ground and removed by 7:30.

The crash is being investigated by the city's Department of Buildings, whose inspector general is conveniently located at 83 Maiden Lane.

Buildings reported emptied by the police as a safety precaution, which vary from source to source, include 80, 83, 90, and 100 Maiden Lane, and 1 and 2 Gold Street. There were no reported injuries.
