Ruben Diaz, Sr.: "I Praise the Lord" for Ability to Support Republican Bob Turner in NY -9
"Senator Reverend" Ruben Diaz, Sr., the sole Democratic Senator to vote against the Marriage Equality Act, has just announced that he's supporting Republican Bob Turner in tomorrow's special election in NY-9, which will fill the seat vacated by Anthony Weiner.
Gee, we wonder . . . what issue could possibly have been behind his rather enthusiastic endorsement?
"I praise the Lord that the National Organization for Marriage has given me opportunities to robo-call and send mailings to the voters in the 9th Congressional District about my support for Bob Turner's pro-family values," Diaz wrote in a statement on his political website.
The race in NY-9, which Nate Silver predicted last week could conceivably go Republican, began as a referendum on President Obama when Weiner resigned. Despite the economy, it has somewhat surprisingly shaped up instead as a referendum on same-sex marriage after the Marriage Equality Act passed, which David Weprin voted for in the Assembly and Bob Turner has condemned. The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), which has vowed wrath against every candidate who voted for marriage equality, is pulling out all the stops for NY-9, reportedly committing $75K on the race.
Here's Diaz's full statement:
"I am encouraged by Sienna polls and news reports showing that Conservative Party and pro-family candidate, Bob Turner, has a real chance for victory over his opponent, David Weprin, in this week's Special Election in New York's 9th Congressional District.
I praise the Lord that the National Organization for Marriage has given me opportunities to robo-call and send mailings to the voters in the 9th Congressional District about my support for Bob Turner's pro-family values. These efforts will empower Bob Turner with real support from New York's Hispanic community.
I expect that the Hispanic vote in this race will be influential in determining who wins, and since the Hispanic community has traditional family values, I believe they will vote for Bob Turner because of his position against gay marriage."

On the other side, we saw a flurry of social media activity over the weekend, trying to wrangle up the largely slumbering marriage equality forces into a get out the vote effort for Weprin tomorrow.
