Rudy Giuliani Redux? Hope Springs Eternal
There's an item on Politico from the newest blogger, Maggie Haberman, late of the Post and Daily News, suggesting that Rudy Giuliani may be back for one more bite at the apple. We can only hope.
Haberman notes that the ex-mayor, ex-presidential candidate, ex-senate candidate, ex-gubernatorial possible is headed for New Hampshire next month. The last Rudy trip to this presidential campaign ground zero territory didn't end so well: He finished 4th with a whopping 8.5 percent in the 2008 primary. But the new tour comes as Rudy is again stepping up his talking game: "His high-profile reemergence, coinciding with the return of terror to the national headlines and numerous Sunday shows appearances bashing the president on the issue, leaves little doubt that he wants to be in the national mix," writes Haberman.
Locally, Fred Siegel, (author, "The Prince of the City: Giuliani, New York, and the Genius of American Life") still holds the Giuliani banner highest. And he tells Politico that he doesn't think the goal here is necessarily another presidential run, maybe just a nice cabinet slot when the GOP retakes the White House. "There is a strong, and I think justified, sense that there's a reasonable chance that (President Obama could) be a one-term president," says Siegel. "It seems to me it's all in play."
Hmm. Homeland Security would seem like a natural, if only the damn media would stop mentioning those two big thumbs up that Rudy gave when George W. Bush asked him if his old police commissioner could handle the job. Speaking of Bernie Kerik, he's due to report to prison today. Kerik reports on his blog that he spent his last free night watching a Sylvester Stallone flick. He's looking at 33 months. Ouch. Any comment, Mr. G?
