Ruth Madoff Dumps Bernie
Ruth Madoff has finally left Bernie Madoff, her husband of 52 years who will be behind bars for the rest of his life. According to the Post, it's a last-ditch attempt to re-forge a connection with estranged son Andrew, who shunned her completely after the suicide of his brother Mark in December of last year. Andrew's family even turned her away when she flew to Greenwich to attend Mark's memorial service at Andrew's home.
According to reports, Ruth has been living "frugally" in a loaned apartment in Florida and hasn't spoken to Bernie since Mark's suicide. She dyed her hair red and started using her maiden name, Alpern, to keep a low profile.
Meanwhile, elsewhere in the Madoff family:
- Son Andrew, 44, who has three children, has also been keeping a low profile. He has reportedly had "moments of intense grief" since the death of brother Mark. Andrew is not allowed to spend more than $1,000 without the approval of a court-appointed trustee, and he must document purchases of more than $500. He no longer speaks to his mother or father. There are rumors that Little, Brown will be publishing a memoir by his fiancée, Catherine Hooper, in November.
- Bernie Madoff is still in prison in North Carolina, and will be for the rest of his life. You can buy iPad covers made out of his clothes.
There aren't yet any reports of actual divorce proceedings from Ruth, but those may be coming soon.
