Some Bloomberg Budget Cuts Leaked
Mayor Bloomberg will present tomorrow a plan to cut $1.5 billion from the city budget. Some details have been revealed, and they include the firing of 500 city employees and the attrition of 2,500 more. 21 seasonal workers will not return to the Parks Department, 187 Sanitation workers will be phased out, and 127 vacant Children's Services positions will go unfilled, for starters. (Newsday adds that the Department of Education will lose 475 non-teaching positions.) The New York Post says that the Fire Department will have shorter training schedules and cut some night hours for (hopefully redundant) NYFD companies, and the NYPD is cancelling the Police Academy class that was to start to January. Some Department of Health programs will go, and a property tax rebate may be suspended.
