Somebody Got Murdered: Of Livery Cabs and Love Gone Bad
No one ever said driving a livery cab is an easy job: the pay sucks, the hours are terrible, and then of course, there is always the chance that someone will try to kill you.
That's what happened to livery driver Tamiz Din (left), a 50-year-old man of Indian descent living in the Sheepshead Bay section of Brooklyn who, we reported yesterday, was shot and killed..
Only, the police are saying this may not have been a run-of-the-mill livery cab robbery gone out of control. Police very much want to speak with Din's abusive ex-boyfriend, Saleem Khan, the Daily News reported this morning.
Police Commissioner Ray Kelly told reporters yesterday that on the morning after the slaying, Khan was scheduled to appear in court to answer to assault and harassment charges. Khan also had two orders of protection against him. Last June, he allegedly broke four of Din's teeth with a steering wheel lock.
Din was attacked early yesterday after a stop at a local grocery store. Three men confronted him just outside his home and one of them shot him. His wallet, however, was not taken, the News said.
Meanwhile, across town in the Bronx, prosecutors yesterday announced the indictment of a 20-year-old in the May 10 slaying of another livery cab driver.
Prosecutors say Francisco Santos shot Roberto Pita, 37, several times in the back and head during an apparent robbery. In an effort to save himself and kill the robber, the police have said, Pita slammed the car in a wall at a Bronx school. The impact pinned Santos in the car and allowed a quick arrest. But Pita did not survive.
A Bronx grand jury charged Santos with second degree murder and first degree manslaughter. He's scheduled to be arraigned May 28.
