Surprise! Mitchell Sworn In as New Staten Island Councilman
You have to watch those Staten Islanders like a hawk. Turns out the recount in the Ken Mitchell-Debi Rose February 24 race to replace Michael McMahon on the city council was, without our notice, finished on March 7 -- showing Mitchell with a 342-vote lead. He was certified last week, and sworn in today. He says he will "work closely" with local councilmembers James Oddo and Oddo and Vincent Ignizio "to ensure that Staten Island receives its fair share of city resources." With Rose's defeat, Staten Island keeps its status as the only borough never to have elected a black person to public office.
