Suspect Arrested in Staten Island Baseball Bat and Bias Attack (UPDATE: 2nd Man Arrested)
Police have made an arrest in that Staten Island bias attack we told you about yesterday. The Staten Island Advance says cops have responded to tips and picked up Joseph Sweeney, 23, on charges of second-degree assault as a hate crime, second-degree assault, and criminal possession of a weapon. Luis Maltez was in a gas station checkout line on the morning of June 17 when a white man cut in line and said something about Mexicans (Maltez is Nicaraguan); that's where this surveillance photo was taken. Later, as Maltez was walking away, the man allegedly returned with two accomplices and beat him with baseball bats, sending Maltez to the hospital, where he received 18 stitches on the back of his head. Cops are still looking for the other men.
Update: The cops picked another guy, Albijond Kaja, 28, of Brooklyn for the crime.
