The Obies...'Not-At-All Sluggish'
9:46 pm It’s time to announce the winners of the $10,000 in grant money that the Voice donates to deserving theater institutions. This year there are two awards of $5000 each. The first winner is … Theater of a Two-Headed Calf! Apparently they’ve done it all from Polish surrealism to a lesbian soap opera to punk-rock kabuki musicals. Amazing!
The second winner is . . . the Keen Company!
9:44 pm Priscilla Lopez serves up an Obie to Ben Katchor (drawings), Jim Findlay and Jeff Sugg (set and projection design), Russell H. Champa (lighting) for scenic design for The Slug Bearers of Kayrol Island (Vineyard Theatre). This award is for their “not-at-all sluggish achievement.” Har-har.
9:41 pm The lovely Heidi Schreck has won an Obie for her performance in Drum of the Waves of Horikawa (Theater of a Two-Headed Calf/HERE).
9:37 pm Joel Hatch has won an Obie for his “heart-rending performance” as the wage slave Mr. Zero in the musical Adding Machine (Minetta Lane Theatre).
