The Subway Sucks, But at Least It Isn't the DC Metro (Which Derailed, Again)
OK, so our subways are getting more expensive and frequently out of service, but at least they're not as dangerous as the DC Metro. This morning at 10:13 a Red Line train derailed near the Farragut North Metrorail station. No injuries are reported, but at the writing passengers are still in the train awaiting assistance. And there are a lot of them, because Federal workers were coming back to work after four and a half snow days.
The Metro has comfy seats, attractive stations, and offers (when it is not going off the tracks) a smooth ride. But it closes at 3 a.m. on weekends and at midnight on weekdays. And its safety record is trending badly. At least when our trains kill people, it's usually because they're on the tracks.
New York subway accidents, let alone derailments, are now rare and it's been a few years since anyone was seriously hurt in one. Count your blessings, citizens!
