The Upside To Rudy's Pro-Sox Flip-Flop
The New York Post went the headline "Red Coat," which is probably a tad better.
If you're a Yankees fan, you're probably sickened by the fact that Rudy Giuliani is rooting for the Red Sox to win the World Series.
"I'm rooting for the Red Sox," the Republican presidential contender Tuesday told a Boston audience, just a few T stops from Fenway Park.
"I'm an American League fan, and I go with the American League team, maybe with the exception of the Mets. Maybe that would be the one time I wouldn't because I'm loyal to New York."
But if you're not a Yankees fan, it's probably good news. Even before Rudy's Beantown pandering, it was always fun to remind Bombers fans that "America's Mayor" is a huge Yankees fan. The conversation usually goes something like this:
Yankees fan: Derek Jeter blah blah blah. Twenty Six rings blah blah blah.
Other fan: Totally, man. Jeter, 26 rings, Rudy Giuliani. It's so cool that he backs your team. He's like the quintessential Yankees fan. He's "America's Mayor" and he likes your team. That's so awesome.
Yankee fan: Bullshit, he's not a real Yankees fan. He sucks.
Other fan: He's got World Championship rings from the Yankees. He's practically part of the team.
Yankee fan: (Silence)
Now, it will only be that much sweeter to play that game with Yankee fans. It also may be used to similar effect on Boston fans. Tell them you think Rudy's endorsement is good luck—and watch the blood slowly drain out of their face (unless they're red-faced drunk.)
We haven't tried the Boston-Rudy angle yet, but a native Bostonian in the office says the typical Sawx fan would probably appreciate the endorsement. Makes some sense. Staten Islanders are often impervious to the Rudy-as-Yankee-fan ball-breaking as well. Try it and let us know.
