There Will Be a Ticker-Tape Parade for the U.S. Women's National Soccer Team, After All

Manhattan Borough President Gayle Brewer didn't need that Change.org petition after all. This afternoon, the Office of the Mayor announced there will indeed be a ticker-tape parade down the "Canyon of Heroes" for the U.S. women's soccer team, which trounced Japan 5-2 on Sunday in the Women's World Cup Final. The parade's set for 11 a.m. Friday.

Brewer's efforts began on Monday afternoon, when she called on Mayor Bill de Blasio — still on vacation with family in the Southwestern United States — to hold the parade, via this Twitter update:

This was the beginning of a publicity campaign by Brewer, which included stops on WPIX's morning show and the Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Speaking on the radio, Brewer said "we've never had a canyon of heroines down Broadway," and pointed out it would be the first time a woman was honored with the big parade since 1960, when New Yorker Carol Heiss was honored for her Olympic gold medal in figure-skating.

"It's time for the women to march down Broadway," Brewer said.

Here's the full release from the mayor's office:

NEW YORK — On Friday, July 10, join your fellow New Yorkers in celebrating the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team on their historic World Cup championship. All are invited to celebrate along the parade route. Go to nyc.gov/parade or call 311 on Wednesday, July 8 between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. EST to sign up for your chance to attend the special program at City Hall.

WHO: Mayor Bill de Blasio U.S. Women’s World Cup Championship Team and Special Guests

WHAT: Parade in honor of U.S. Women’s World Cup Champions

WHEN: Friday, July 10, 2015 at 11 a.m.

WHERE: Canyon of Heroes Along Broadway from the Battery to City Hall

Here's the parade route:

There are no New Yorkers on the team, but Carli Lloyd, who recorded a mind-blowing hat trick inside fifteen minutes, is from Delran Township, New Jersey.

Other ticker-tape parades this century were for Yankees World Series wins in 2000 and 2009, and for Giants Super Bowl wins in 2008 and 2012. The women's team, meanwhile, celebrated in Los Angeles today with about 10,000 fans.

This goal from Lloyd alone is worth a parade:
