Toasted Leg Syndrome Leaves Humans in Tailspin Over Where to Put Their Laptops
Just when you thought Restless Leg Syndrome was the most horrifying and preeminent leg syndrome that you might possibly be afflicted by or fancy yourself hypochondriacally afflicted by, there's another, more likely (and, oddly, sort of delicious-sounding) leg syndrome! And that is, "Toasted Leg Syndrome." Sound scary? That's 'cause it is.
Briefly: people who sit with their laptops on their legs for a while will note that their legs become hot. Scientifically: This is because the laptop has become hot, and the heat transfers to the legs. This happens to us so much it could also be called "Blogger Leg Syndrome," and here at RS, several of us have combated our laptop's fiery touch with well-placed pillows, and sometimes even pants. But if you prefer your computering to be done strictly bare-leg-to-computer and without the distraction of clunky tables or laptop holders, you may be a victim of TLS.
You can thank a group of Swiss researchers who've studied the dire ailment, signified by "discoloured sponge-patterned skin caused by long-term heat exposure," for alerting us to its existence. They looked at the cases of the 10 whole people since 2004 who have suffered the problem and been courageous enough to report it. The youngest, a 12-year-old boy, played computer games a few hours a day for several months. Very interesting computer games, apparently.
"He recognized that the laptop got hot on the left side. However, regardless of that, he did not change its position," the researchers wrote.
So...Toasted Leg Syndrome is pretty much the technological equivalent of not pulling your finger away from the scalding pan and instead staring at the highly intriguing wall while it cooks to a crisp. Expect class-action lawsuit to be forthcoming.
