Tony Award Nominees Announced
The Tony Award nominees have just been announced. The best musical nominees are Billy Elliot, Next to Normal, Rock of Ages, and Shrek the Musical. (Rock of Ages being a jukebox musical, its place in the Best Score category was taken by 9 to 5; [title of show] replaced it in the Best Book list.) Best play nominees are Dividing the Estate, God of Carnage, reasons to be pretty, and 33 Variations. The revival award nominees are, for musicals, Guys and Dolls, Hair, Pal Joey, and West Side Story and, for straight plays, Joe Turner's Come and Gone, Mary Stuart, The Norman Conquests, and Waiting for Godot. Best Special Theatrical Event nominees are Liza's at The Palace, Slava's Snowshow, Soul of Shaolin, and You're Welcome America. A Final Night with George W. Bush. Celebrity thesps drew a bunch of nominations, including Jane Fonda (33 Variations), James Gandolfini, Marcia Gay Harden, Hope Davis, Jeff Daniels (God of Carnage), and Geoffrey Rush (Exit the King). The three kids who play the lead in Billy Elliot share a Best Actor in a Musical nomination.
Pretty distinguished, eh? This is shaping up to be another 2000.
