Update: Gloucester Township police have identified this morning's shooter as Eddie Jones III, a 39-year-old man from Willingboro, New Jersey.
Gloucester Township Police Chief Harry Earle revealed in a press conference this afternoon that the incident began around 1:00 this morning, when police were alerted that someone was lurking around a house. Jones, accused of domestic violence before, was charged this morning with stalking among other offenses and taken to Gloucester Township's police station for booking.
Once there, Jones was able to overpower a female police officer, Ruth Burns, and wrestle away her gun. Two sergeants, Kevin Thyne and James Garber, engaged Jones, who fired at the officers. They were able to kill the gunman, but all three police officers were wounded in the crossfire. Burns was struck in the foot. Thyne was hit in his duty belt. Garber took bullets to his abdomen and chest and had to be rushed to surgery.
Around 5:45 this morning, a man opened fired within the Gloucester Township police station in Camden County, New Jersey.
reports that the gunman, who still hasn't been identified to media, was being taken into custody following a domestic violence incident. According to Gloucester Township Deputy Police Chief David Harkin, when the suspect arrived to the station, he got into a violent confrontation with police officers. In the scuffle, he was able to grab a gun. That's when began firing on officers.
He hit three cops. Two suffered graze wounds. One, however, was struck below his bulletproof vest in his abdomen.The third officer is currently in surgery. After wounding the third officer, the shooter was shot and killed by police.
Harkin says there will be a press conference at 3 p.m. More updates to come.
