WASHINGTON, D.C., September 24While the U.S. rhetorically blasts bin Laden, the real attack may well be against Saddam Hussein, who is suspected of developing chemical and biological warfare agents. Rafi Eitan, the former head of Israel's Mossad secret service, told the Sydney Morning Herald: "I have no doubt whatsoever that the mastermind of this atrocity [the WTC attack] is none other than the Iraqi dictator." Military sources suspect that just as soon as the U.S. carriers get close enough, the real attacks will target Iraq, with bin Laden as a sideshow.
Meanwhile, the London Times is reporting that a British Special Air Forces commando unit has already made contact and traded fire with Taliban troops inside Afghanistan. The SAS is working with MI6 agents to track down bin Laden, the paper says. The Times also reports that 82nd and 101st U.S. Airborne are just inside the Pakistan border with Afghanistan, and that the U.S. has Air Force units in Uzbekistan. The British are staging attacks from Tajikistan.
