What If Kerry Wins . . .
WASHINGTON, 4:56 p.m.Early exit polls are suggesting a John Kerry victory may well be within sight. If he should winand that's still a very, very big ifwhat would that mean for the United States and the world?
Even though the Democrats probably can't win back Congress today, a Kerry presidency could stop the hemorrhaging in Washington.
Neo-conservatives would be dead ducks. They would be swept out of the Pentagon and other bureaus of government. The American Enterprise Institute, where they all come from, would become a very lonely firebase Charlie for these hawks.
The Christian right would be done, at least for the time being. Look for the Christian Right to hightail it out of Washington, its anti-gay, anti-choice agenda well out of play.
The Supreme Court would be saved. It would be very difficult to pack the court with more Thomases and Scalias, even if the ailing Chief Justice William Rehnquist resigned or died before the inauguration.
The federal attacks on abortion and birth-control rights would stop. Kerry stands firmly behind a woman's right to control her body.
Gay bashing would be out. Like George Bush, Kerry doesn't support gay marriage but he wouldn't go in for using gay people as red meat to appease conservatives or even moderates.
The U.S. would start looking to stabilize Iraq quickly, and would place renewed emphasis on getting Osama bin Laden and wiping out al Qaeda.
Some repair of our European alliances would start.
