Who Loves Ya Baby? The Bald Owners of This Southside Bar Do
The USA Network's new Kojak might star Ving Rhames, but this four-month-old Southside bar on Bedford Avenue is named for the original lollipop-eating chrome dome Telly Savalas, thanks to a game of "pop culture free association" played by two of the bar's bald owners. And like Telly, the bar has a whiff of old-school Vegas about itwith its handcrafted cherrywood bar, large circular leather booths, and dim red lighting provided by the hand-blown glass fixturesbut the unpretentious crowd of locals in Williamsburg-issue Converses will remind you that you're still in Brooklyn.
The narrow bar, encased in mesquite wood and exposed brick like a rustic urban log cabin, is stocked like a British pub. They carry 12 uncommon beers on tap, like Fuller's London Pride pale ale (a light, bitter brew), Pranqster (a Belgian-style golden beer), and Erdinger (a lemony Hefeweizen perfect for springtime), and serve them in well-poured 20-ounce (British) pints for only $5. If beer isn't your thing, try the unusual house-infused vodkas in flavors as varied as blood orange, pear, and ginger ($7 for a cocktail), or the decadent chocolate martini ($9) made with homemade Oreo-flavored vodka. The bar's young owners have thought of everything; every detail of the bar from the vodkas to the furniture was lovingly created. "Who loves ya, baby?"Obviously Savalas does.
