Why Won't Mitt Romney Release His Pre-2010 Tax Returns?
We have to talk.
I know you have a lot going on, and I know you don't have much time for me anymore: after all, I'm just your lowly, pre-2010 tax returns, so why bother with me?
Maybe I should be used to this by now. You're always so swamped, Mitt, CEOing or saving the Olympics or running for president -- it's always something. It's always been something. And I'm OK with that. I'm OK with you ignoring me. Actually, I hate to admit that I have always kind of liked that about you, Mitt. You're a go-getter, you're doing things, and you need the space to do them. Sure, it hurt that you were too busy investing or restructuring or outsourcing or whatever to call or text all those years, but I understood your needs. I put them ahead of my own, and I have no regrets for doing so.
But here's what I'm not OK with: all of a sudden, when you're in the spotlight -- when it's your moment, Mitt -- you act like you're embarrassed by me.
A lot of people -- such as Barack Obama -- have suggested that you're going out of your way to hide me, and it hurts, Mitt. It hurts a lot.
When they first started talking about us, and you said nothing, I thought that you'd eventually share me with the world.
I thought: I can't be that bad, right?
I mean, how could I be any worse than the tax returns you did release?
And they do suggest you took major advantage of tax loopholes to pay a low overall tax rate -- less than 15 percent in taxes on $43 million in income.
So just tell me already, Mitt: How can the 2010 and estimated 2011 returns be so much better than me?
We had so much more time together!
Now, the Obama campaign is even saying that you might not have "paid any taxes at all" prior to 2010.
They're saying that nobody knows for sure because you won't release me, Mitt.
"What is Mitt Romney hiding?" they asked in the new ad, released this morning.
How do you think this makes me feel?
I mean, your dad started the tradition of releasing 12 years of returns, for goodness sakes.
What is it about me, Mitt, that even drives you against your family?
Anyway, I'm sure this is a lot harder for me to go through than you.
All I have is the past, Mitt, and even that seems increasingly uncertain.
