Willets Point Controversy Continues; City Pays Big $ For Polluted Land
Despite the departure of supporter Hiram Monserrate from the City Council for the State Senate, the anti-development crew at Willets Point is hanging in, and the Willets Point Defense Committee, a local chop-shop consortium, will hold a press conference in front of Citi Field at 1 p.m. today to protest the city's planned reclamation. Queens Crap, indefatigable follower of the Willets Point case, also points out that the city recently bought parcels of land at Willets Point at ten times their assessed value, and that a city environmental assessment shows, unsurprisingly, that Willets Point's soil and groundwater are extremely polluted, which finding will come in handy if the city, as expected, uses eminent domain to seize land from holdouts and turn it to more modernized residential and commercial uses.
