Willets Point Group Charges Shulman is an "Unregistered Lobbyist"
The Willets Point Industry and Realty Association, a consortium of small businessmen that has strenuously opposed the Willets Point redevelopment plan, is trying a new angle: the Queens Gazette reports that WPIRG is charging that former Queens Beep Claire Shulman, a staunch and busy redevelopment supporter, is a "lobbyist" on behalf of "the Bloomberg administration's ULURP land use application for redevelopment of Willets Point," and that her access to government groups requires her to be registered as such.
The New York Observer considered this question in February, pointing out that the law requires filing for individuals who "expend, incur or receive" $2,000 or more in "reportable compensation and expenses" for their efforts.
The Gazette says Shulman's spokesman, Barry Grodenchik, admitted to the paper that Shulman qualifies as a lobbyist and that "we are updating our city filing and are moving to update our state filing."
