Yuri Foreman-Miguel Cotto WBA Title Bout On at Yankee Stadium
The plans were almost derailed by a previously scheduled bar mitzvah, but WBA Super Welterweight Champion Yuri Foreman will be defending his title against 3-time World Champion Miguel Cotto June 5 at Yankee Stadium. Foreman, a rabbinical student from Belarus by way of Israel and Brooklyn, and Cotto, from Puerto Rico by way of the Bronx, will be the first boxers to fight as guests of the Yankees since the Ali-Norton fight in 1976.
Jonathan Ballan, a lawyer involved in the financing of the stadium, had June 5 reserved for the bar mitzvah of his son, Scott, but agreed to share the date with the title bout in return for a private meeting with the combatants before the fight and special seating for their guests. The start time for the main event will be pushed back to 11:30 p.m. to accommodate Foreman's sabbath observance.
The old stadium hosted 46 boxing matches, including both Joe Louis-Max Schmeling bouts.
