Drop Off Service
211 Avenue A

Sure, in the East Village there are plenty of bars (havens for NYU students with fake IDs, stupidly swank lounges, PBR dives crowded with studiously starved hipsters), but there's nowhere for a grown-up to drink. Till now. Drop Off Service—so named for the stenciled sign in the window left over from its previous incarnation as a laundromat—is a dark, unpretentious pub just south of 14th Street where good beer is the star. The large size of the rustically decorated room and the glut of seating options prevent the usual crush experienced at other neighborhood watering holes, and though there are a few Guinness signs hanging on the exposed-brick walls, there is none of the stagy, affected Britishness often associated with this city's pub decor. The unusual English and German drafts, like Arrogant Bastard Ale, Marston's Pedigree, and Hofbrauhaus Original, show great care for and attention to beer. Even the cider—they offer Blackthorn, a U.K. brand that is dry with a bite, unlike the overly sweet American stuff—is worth a try. And the price is right: $6 for all 20-ounce "imperial" pints. So drop yourself off here for a drink or four; this "service" is impeccable.
