By choosing individualism above all else, trumpeter Smith has carved a unique spot for himself: a philosopher/bandleader with a constant yen for experimentation. He's a cagey soundscapist, whether leading a big band or playing duets (he's just dropped a sweet collab with the late drummer Ed Blackwell).
